Hosted by the ALA IRC Africa Subcommittee
I, and the rest of the committee, are grateful to Evelyne Mwandia and Chin Idirisu for sharing their experiences and perspectives. Their ideas are relevant to all information institutions. Additional thanks to all who attended.
Evelyne Mwandia, Executive Director, Start A Library Trust (Kenya)
evelyne@startalibrary.org
https://startalibrary.org/
Start A Library establishes libraries, trains school communities, delivers literacy programs, and advocates for equitable literacy policies in Kenya. Their activities include training classroom teachers as teacher-librarians, supporting creative writing, and coaching parents and student clubs in promoting reading and life skills. The Library of Congress Literacy Awards named Start A Library a 2025 Successful Practices Honoree for their National Read Aloud initiative. Evelyne will discuss the work at Start A Library and put it in a broader systems perspective that all practitioners can relate to.
Chin Idirisu, Founder and Executive Director, Cameroon Education Foundation (CEF)
chinidress@yahoo.com
The Cameroon Education Foundation is a non-profit, non-political, non-governmental organization based in Cameroon, working to create libraries in rural schools in the North West Province, part of the Anglophone region. Their projects include donating textbooks to primary schools and collaborating with Sister City and Rotary International connections. Chin will describe his community-based projects and international networking.
Yours, for the committee,
Justine
