The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) is now accepting grant applications for the October –December sessions of the association’s four-week fundamentals online courses.
One free seat per online continuing educational course session is available to librarians and information professionals from developing countries.
Fundamentals of Acquisitions
Session 5: October 11 – November 5
Fundamentals of Acquisitions (FOA) focuses on what you need to know about the basics of acquiring monographs and serials: goals and methods; financial management of materials budgets; and relationships among acquisitions librarians, library booksellers, subscription agents, and publishers.
Fundamentals of Electronic Resources Acquisitions
Session 5: October 4 – October 29
Fundamentals of Electronic Resources Acquisitions (FERA) provides an overview of acquiring, providing access to, administering, supporting, and monitoring access to electronic resources. Participants are taught a basic background in electronic resource acquisitions including product trials, licensing, purchasing methods, and pricing models and will provide an overview of the sometimes complex relationships between vendors, publishers, platform providers, and libraries.
Fundamentals of Collection Development and Management
Session 5: October 4 – October 29
Session 6: November 15 – December 17
Fundamentals of Collection Development and Management addresses the basic components of these important areas of responsibility in libraries. Topics include
Complete definition of collection development and collection management, Collections policies and budgets as part of library planning, Collection development (selecting for and building collections), Collection management (e.g., making decisions after materials are selected, including decisions about withdrawal, transfer, preservation), Collection analysis—why and how to do it, Outreach, liaison, and marketing, and Trends and some suggestions about the future for collection development and management.
Applicants must have a degree in library or information science (e.g. a 4-year undergraduate degree or a master’s) or, be enrolled in a library or information science program or, be working as a librarian or information professional in a developing country. Applicants must be a legal national from a qualifying developing country (see ALCTS Web site for list), have working knowledge of English, and have technical abilities to participate in an online course.
