Library metadata is transforming. Our creation process and supply chains are evolving, and new architectures are emerging. At the same time, the staff who handle metadata aren't getting the professional development opportunities they need to keep up with this change. For a long time, linked data enthusiasts could not convince their leadership of the need to prepare for this transformation, but that has changed. OCLC and library stakeholders are showing that linking data across isolated systems and services will enhance the user experience and allow for efficiencies across the value chain. This transformation is key to achieving important library goals, such as multilingualism to support equity, diversity, and inclusion principles.
In this session, OCLC staff and library metadata experts will discuss the promise of linked data and what these changes mean for all of us. We will explore the changes taking place in several areas, including the transition to linked data and identifiers, the description of inside-out and facilitated collections, the evolution of metadata as a service, as well as resulting staffing requirements.
