RDA 2.15.1.4 : best recording method for Identifier of Manifestation

  • 1.  RDA 2.15.1.4 : best recording method for Identifier of Manifestation

    Posted 4 hours ago

    Happy Friday everyone,

I would like to invoke this list's collective wisdom regarding the best method for recording an Identifier for Manifestation (RDA 2.15.1.4). This matter concerns both RDA and MARC, so I apologize if I have not chosen the most appropriate mailing list for my question.

We are currently cataloguing a collection of posters published by the Government of Quebec. Each poster bears a standard number assigned by the Government of Quebec. Our previous practice was to record such numbers in a note.

    Example:

500 ## $a Numbered 22-1857-14 in the lower left corner.

However, I have realized that it would probably be preferable to use field 024 to record these identifiers. In Official RDA, Identifier for Manifestation is mapped to MARC field 024 (and not to field 500).

Under RDA 2.15.1.4, cataloguers are instructed to:

Precede the identifier with a trade name or the name of the agency, etc., responsible for assigning the identifier, if readily ascertainable.

If there were a MARC code designating the Government of Quebec, I would record it in subfield $2, but unfortunately none appears to exist. Should I therefore record "Government of Quebec" as qualifying information in subfield $q?

    Example:

    024 8# $a 22-1857-14 $q (Government of Quebec)

Or should I interpret RDA more literally and record the name of the issuing agency directly in subfield $a, preceding the identifier?

    Example:

    024 8# $a Government of Quebec: 22-1857-14

Many thanks in advance for your valuable input!

    Marie-Chantal
