Dear Colleagues,
Thank you for a great 2022.
Although it was a busy and difficult year for many of us, with challenges in both our personal and professional lives, reflecting on and capturing the moments that made it all worthwhile, no matter how big or small, will help carry us into creating an exceptional 2023.
I will be reflecting on my first six months as ALA President and the privileges and opportunities I've had to represent our association and profession around the world. Hearing library workers' stories of creating community, changing lives, and embracing change have inspired me in my own professional work and my work as a leader. It has brought new energy to the work of our association and how we work together. I thank you all for sharing with me and challenging all of us to do better.
Although it will continue to be difficult, I look forward to our next six months together as we continue to unite against book bans. As we face these challenges, we must embrace each other in community and embrace moments of joy, strengthening ourselves for the personal toll this work can take on us. The ALA I know is one that stands up for what is right, and we will continue doing so because of passionate members and allies. Our communities will be stronger in the end because of the efforts we put forth every day.
It is an honor to be an ALA member with each of you and I look forward to continuing to work together in solidarity and with hope in the year to come.
Well wishes for a happy new year.
Me ka mahalo nui,
Lessa
