As far as we know, Juliet Capulet was not a cataloger, but she certainly knew about family names:
'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
Join Juliet and Romeo to learn more about family names as well as all of the other types of descriptive access points in bibliographic records when OCLC's Becky Dean and Bryan Baldus present the May 2023 Virtual AskQC Office Hours and answer Juliet's question: What's in a name?: Descriptive access points overview.
Becky and Bryan will cover MARC personal, corporate, and meeting name fields and title fields, both controllable and uncontrollable. That which we call an access point, by any other name such as heading, would be as descriptive. That which we call a preferred title, by any other name such as conventional or uniform title, would be as distinctive.
Join us on either Tuesday, May 9 at 10 AM (Eastern time) or Thursday, May 18 at 4 PM (Eastern time), whichever is more convenient for you. Registration links are here. Following the presentation, there will be ample time for Q&A about the topic, as well as any other cataloging topics.
On the Previous AskQC Office Hours page, you may access the recordings, slides, and Q&A from past presentations. When you register, you will receive an email reminder before your chosen session along with a link to the WebEx event. All Virtual AskQC Office Hours are available from OCLC at no charge.
