Abstract
Over the past decade, Getty has been building the infrastructure and expertise to leverage Linked Data across its cross-disciplinary collections, working across archives, libraries, museum collections, taxonomy, and research data sets like the Provenance Index. In doing so, we've learned a bunch of things that work-and don't work-when trying to operationalize semantic graphs. Some of it is technical-how to leverage queries and APIs, how to track changing data, and how to integrate systems and transform data. But even more of it is social-how to build complex data systems with transparency and how to manage the cross-disciplinarity required to effectively create use linked data. In this talk, I'll share some of the trade-offs we've made and lessons we've learned around topics such as data granularity, reconciliation, and the joys and pains of working with emerging standards.

David Newbury is Senior Director, Public Technologies at Getty, where he works with leads the team responsible for using technology to share Getty's knowledge, collections, and campuses with the world. He oversees digital imaging, collections platforms & data, and digital visitor experience, and has led Getty's transition to a linked-data first organization, working across the Museum, Archives, Library, Vocabularies, and Provenance teams to develop data infrastructure and access mechanisms for Getty's knowledge and collections. David is the former president of MCN, on the executive committee for the IIIF consortium, and one of the original creators of the Linked.Artstandard.
