Poet James Russell Lowell asked "And what is so rare as a day in June?/Then, if ever, come perfect days." Although we cannot promise perfection, we can offer two days in June 2023 for the contemplation of "Cataloging Rare Materials Defensively." Join us on either Tuesday, June 6 at 10 AM (Eastern time) or Thursday, June 15 at 4 PM (Eastern time), whichever is more convenient for you, when Kate James and Jay Weitz will provide background about how OCLC's Duplicate Detection and Resolution (DDR) software deals with WorldCat bibliographic records created for rare and archival materials. You will learn hints about using MARC 21 and the instructions in RDA and AACR2 to the best advantage in making sure that DDR performs appropriately when encountering a record that is legitimately unique according to the descriptive conventions.
Registration links are here. Following the presentation, there will be ample time for Q&A about DDR and rare materials, as well as any other cataloging topics. On the Previous AskQC Office Hours page, you may access the recordings, slides, and Q&A from past VAOH presentations. When you register, you will receive an email reminder before your chosen session along with a link to the WebEx event.
All Virtual AskQC Office Hours are available from OCLC at no charge.
