Further follow-up to removal of "Electronic books" from 655 fields in WorldCat

  • 1.  Further follow-up to removal of "Electronic books" from 655 fields in WorldCat

    Posted Nov 29, 2022 09:34 AM

As originally announced in August, OCLC began a project in September to remove 655 fields from bibliographic records in WorldCat containing terms that are not appropriate for the field because they are indications of the type of carrier of the resource rather than an indication of the genre/form. Information about the carrier may be provided in other areas of the bibliographic record including OCLC Fixed Field, 006, 007, 300, and 3xx fields. The 655 fields removed contained terms (see list below in this message) beginning with "Electronic" coded as coming from LCSH, LCGFT, an unspecified controlled vocabulary, or local controlled vocabulary. These examples represent the four scenarios where the field is removed:

    655 _0 Electronic books

    655 _7 Electronic books $2 lcgft

    655 _4 Electronic books

    655 _7 Electronic books $2 local

NEW:  To expand the cleanup project even further, we have recently added the following four additional terms to the list to delete in the bibliographic record 655 field for 2nd indicator 0, 4, or 7 with subfield $2 lcgft, $2 lcssh, or $2 local.  They will be deleted if the heading begins with:

          Compact disc

          Downloadable

          Online resource

          Streaming audio

These terms are added to the list (below) contained in the September 29, 2022, message. We are removing both the singular and plural forms of all the terms (thus the marks of omission representing "dictionary" and "dictionaries").

    Electronic article

                  Electronic audio book

                  Electronic audiobook

                  Electronic book

                  Electronic dictionar…

                  Electronic director…

                  Electronic dissertation

                  Electronic document

                  Electronic government information

                  Electronic government publication

                  Electronic handbook

                  Electronic journal

                  Electronic manuscript

                  Electronic map

                  Electronic masters project

                  Electronic newsletter

                  Electronic newspaper

                  Electronic publication

                  Electronic score

                  Electronic serial

                  Electronic student paper

                  Electronic text

                  Electronic theses

                  Electronic thesis

If your organization would still like to have "Electronic books" or similar terms in field 655 there are other options that can be used, such as Local Bibliographic Data (LBD) for those institutions that use the WorldShare Management System (WMS). For information on LBDs, please see 3.4.1 Copy- or Institution-Specific Information: https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/specialcataloging.html#copyorinstitutionspecificinformation. For institutions that have other integrated library platforms you can export the record with a 655 second indicator 4 or second indicator 7 and subfield 2 "local" when the term is in a local control vocabulary list. Please do not leave this field on WorldCat records as it will be deleted.

Thanks to all of you who provided suggestions for this list and indicated your support of this project.

Please pardon any duplication of this message.
