As announced earlier this month, after considerable discussion and review, changes have been made to controlling to fully respect the subfield values when controlling headings.
At this time, these changes will only affect Record Manager users, and at present, are only impacting controlling to the Library of Congress Name and Subject Authority files.
Changes to other controllable files available in Record Manager are underway, however, no dates are set as to when these changes will be completed. Announcements will be made when more information is available.
Changes to Connexion will be part of a future effort.
- The result of these changes for Record Manager users will prevent unexpected and incorrect subfield flips, however, it will require a change in user behavior to ensure that the system can make the match.
- Specifically, a Record Manager user will need to include all subfield codes as part of the heading, and not rely on the subfield codes to be automatically supplied as part of controlling.
- Record Manager users can copy/paste the heading from the authority record, or, they can take advantage of the apply link functionality to reduce key strokes and potential typographical errors.
These changes were installed on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.

Following the recent completion of applying controlling to the entire WorldCat database, changes have been made to block the flip of Library of Congress genre terms (originally coded as 655, second indicator 0), to automatically flip to 655, second indicator 7 + $2 lcgft. Because we believe all legacy data has been processed, and because OCLC currently hosts multiple files with genre terms, this is no longer an appropriate automatic change. When a user attempts to control the heading, no match will be made and the user will need to change the indicator value and add the $2 thesaurus source file code to direct the matching to the appropriate authority file.
