    Dear Colleagues,

    I received word yesterday that Dr. Lucille Cole Thomas passed away over the weekend.  Lucille was a true friend, mentor, and an iconic library leader in New York City, nationally, and in the professional library community.  Thank you Lucille, for your wisdom and numerous contributions to the library community.

    Sad news indeed.  Lucille was a leader for school librarians and for ALA.  She always took the high road and loved students and libraries and worked tirelessly for many, many years to be sure that kids had a  shot at an excellent library program.  We should all be thankful for gracious and determined professionals like Lucille who inspired all of us who gained energy from her dedication and great solace and  inspiration from her humor and unending caring.

      I have such fond memories of working with her. She will be missed.

    It is very sad to think of the world without Lucille. She was a mentor to me in her role as past-president of the school library section of NYLA, encouraging me to do even more for school libraries and students, always calling me "Miss Sara." She spearheaded the establishment of April as National School Library Month with some firm and targeted political.visits to Washington and, in New York State, worked as hard to have April 30th designated as School Library Media Day. And then there was her love and work for Brooklyn Public Library! She was a lion of local, state and national library progress. She leaves us with legacy of accomplishments and a charge to never stop our own quest for strong libraries.

    RIP, Miss Lucille.

    Lucille is such a mentor to so many of us - as women, as people of color, as individuals working in youth services, as ALA supporters.  She will be missed in so many ways and I hope we can carry on her good work of mentoring to work towards improving the lives of others, to inspire the reluctant to leadership, to recognize the spark of passion we see in our colleagues, of noticing the little things that make a difference, with grace and kindness,

    Our world will be different without Lucille, but the gifts that she gave us will continue to be passed on.
