Session Title: AI-mazing IDEA: Leveling Up Library Services
This presentation explores the role of AI in libraries, focusing on its potential to advance inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA). It examines how AI can enhance accessibility, bridge gaps, and improve inclusivity for diverse users while addressing the importance of careful prompt engineering to avoid perpetuating biases. The presentation also investigates the use of AI to support patrons with neurodivergent learning disabilities, such as dyslexia or autism, and how to integrate these tools into programming and teaching. It delves into the application of AI as a tool for prompting IDEA in reference interactions and instruction, including its potential to help users understand societal genres and norms and to assist English as a second language learners.
Speakers:
Abe Nemon, Instructional and Online Learning Librarian, Virginia Wesleyan University has studied rare books and taught classes on science fiction literature, but the abiding fascination of his career concerns the rhetorical use of genre and style across multiple media and discursive contexts.
Ashley Tschakert Foertmeyer, Teaching & Engagement Library Ohio Wesleyan University. Her research interests include inclusive pedagogy and the role of generative AI in higher education.
Jennifer Goodland, Reference & Instruction Librarian, San Juan College, started in library science when the big emerging technology was the papyrus scroll. Today she welcomes our robot overlords.
Lisa Boyd, Information Services Library, Canton Public Library, is a PhD candidate in Special Education who specializes in creating inclusive programming for young adults and senior with neurodevelopmental and cognitive disabilities- when she's not busy shushing overly enthusiastic AI assistants.
Melissa Del Castillo fell in love with AI when it allowed her to create images of cats playing keyboards in the styles of Roman mosaics, Baroque paintings and Pop Art. She serves as chair of AIRUS (Artificial Intelligence in Reference & User Services Interest Group
