Join the RUSA History Section for a discussion of newspapers.
Library users love newspapers! They seek them out for many reasons, ranging from tracing a family history to trying to get a glimpse into an earlier time and place. Teachers may use them in the classroom. Researchers may use them as data sources, or fodder for text-mining projects.
As librarians and other staff seek to meet these needs, we may encounter certain challenging realities. The fact is that the role of the newspaper in the information landscape is changing. Many local newspapers have ceased to exist. The newspaper industry is under stress. The online environment that at first glance would seem to make access easier often creates new complications.
In this session, we will discuss the kinds of newspaper questions we get from users in different types of libraries, as well as challenges we have encountered. We will also share strategies for responding to these needs.
Please register to join us for this discussion! Registration is open to anyone. Membership in ALA, RUSA and the History Section are not required to participate in this discussion.
