  • 1.  Risk of bias assessment / critical appraisal tools (non-health sciences)

    Posted Jul 26, 2024 09:52 AM

    Hi all,

I am working on a systematic review guide for non-health sciences researchers. I am having a hard time finding tools and resources on critically appraising evidence outside of the health sciences. Is anyone aware of any tools or other resources in areas such as environmental sciences, social sciences, education, etc.?

    Thanks!

    Hi Jenna,

This guide was published earlier this year: https://brass.libguides.com/evidencesynthesis

Critical appraisal of SRs is something the sub-committee is working on right now.

Hi Jenna:  Temple had a great critical appraisal guide that for some reason was overhauled recently--there is, however, a link to the old version via the Way Back  machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20221211192845/https://guides.temple.edu/systematicreviews/criticalappraisal.  Lots of folks I've talked to swear (swore?) by this guide, and even though a few years out of date at this point, it still seems highly relevant.

    Cheers

Thanks, Jim for sharing my old guide. I left Temple after having my third baby to be closer to home a couple of years ago and it was taken down shortly after. I think it was a lot to maintain.

I don't think anyone knew it was relied upon, including me. 😊

I am now at Christiana Care but since it's a hospital our resources are closed. I have continued to host the old guide on a new website since it was meant to be OA.

    My website is: www.systematicreviewlibrarian.com

The resources may be a little out of date since this is now a personal side...side project, but I've tried to maintain the links now and then. If resources are missing, I am happy to add them.

    Thanks,

    Stephanie

Jenna, I don't have a resource for critical appraisal tools, but I work on evidence synthesis with public administration and planning faculty and would love to see your guide when you finish it.
