Good Morning RIG,
TL;DR
- RIG still needs an Incoming Convener to join the leadership team (3 year-term)
- If we don't receive a nomination by June 30th we can no longer be an interest group
- We will need to move to a discussion group or dissolve
- ALA General Meeting will be June 24th. 2-3:30; we will discuss next steps if we do not receive a nomination by then
The Leadership Team is reaching out because we have not received any nominations for a new Incoming Convener and are past the original due date for submitting. ACRL has given us an extension until June 30th to find someone. Because Interest Groups are required to have 3 officers, if we can not find an Incoming Convener, then we have two options; transition to a discussion group or dissolve. As a discussion group, only one convener is needed each year, and the person can serve as many 1-year terms as they like before finding a replacement. Co-conveners are acceptable as well. Learn more about the differences between discussion groups and interest groups. RIG has been an interest group since they were first formed in 2008-09. We would really want to continue the legacy of this work as an interest group.
RIG Leadership Team Responsibilities
Joining the leadership team would be a 3 year commitment, which includes: assuming the roles of Incoming Convener (2025-26), Convener (2026-27), then Outgoing Convener (2027-28). In the first year, you would be working with me Courtney and me as Outgoing Convener. This leadership role does require ALA/ACRL membership for all three years. The time commitment as Incoming Convener would average 1-2 hours per month as the primary responsibility for the Incoming Convener is to observe and learn on the job. As Convener, the time commitment would average 3-4 hours per month and as Outgoing Convener an average of 1-2 hours per month. Involvement is entirely virtual; attending official ALA/ACRL conferences is not required, as RIG hosts meetings and events virtually to maximize participation for current residents and fellows. Becoming a member of the RIG Convener team is a great national service and leadership opportunity that will look good to prospective institutions on your resume/CV. It is also an opportunity to connect with and hear from residents across the country.
Specific Duties
The leadership team mainly does administrative tasks for RIG like:
- Scheduling and hosting the general meetings
- Keeping a roster of members
- Meeting with residents interested in volunteering
- Connecting volunteers with their teams
- Attending team meetings as requested
- Filling out reports for ACRL.
- Representing RIG during events or professional development opportunities
- Other things that come up like coordinating the RIG Survey
