Registration is open for the webinar "Intellectual freedom in academic libraries and beyond: Concrete steps we can take to fight censorship". It will take place on Wednesday, April 17, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM CDT. The presenter is Dr. Shannon M. Oltmann of the University of Kentucky's School of Information Science. Book challenges have surged across the U.S. since 2020; they have occurred in every state, including Maryland. Although they are often concentrated in public and school libraries, academic librarians need to be concerned, as well. In this talk, we will discuss the current state of book challenges, how this trend pertains to academic libraries, and specific issues in academic libraries. In addition, we will review ways that all librarians can support one another during these challenging times.
Co-sponsored by the Maryland Chapter of ACRL and the Information Freedom Panel of the Maryland Library Association, this program features a keynote from Shannon Oltmann. Dr. Oltmann is a faculty member of the University of Kentucky's School of Information Science and a scholar of intellectual freedom, censorship, privacy, and information ethics.
Following the keynote, attendees will participate in small group discussions led by library workers and other information professionals including members of the Library Freedom Project.
