Description
The University Libraries at the University of Tennessee is committed to recognizing and appreciating the variety of characteristics that make people and communities unique. The UT Libraries puts this concept into action by intentionally selecting and maintaining inclusive resources and modeling behaviors that enable the entire Volunteer community to learn and share discoveries. The Accessibility Coordinator will work as part of a team to acquire library electronic resources, and will work independently and collaboratively to ensure all licensed and purchased electronic resources are accessible. For resources that are not accessible, the Accessibility Coordinator will assess products and create equally effective alternative access plans, or recommend against licensing. The Accessibility Coordinator will document decisions and communicate them in a clear and timely manner to stakeholders.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Accessibility Expertise and Audits
- Serves as the Libraries' accessibility expert
- Gather and evaluate available information regarding product accessibility, such as VPAT or similar accessibility documentation and 3rd party accessibility audits
- Coordinate and conduct regular and impromptu testing of products using diverse equipment and populations
- Provide details regarding accessibility issues along with practical remedies to fix them
- Develop and update Equally Effective Alternative Access Plans as necessary
- Maintain longitudinal records of accessibility status for library licensed resources and provide reports upon request
- Vendor Relations
- Communicate with vendors regarding accessibility expectations
- As part of licensing negotiation team, evaluate accessibility language in vendor license agreements
- Request vendor accessibility road maps, as applicable
- Advocate for the Libraries' patrons by informing vendors how to ensure their products are accessible
- Create, maintain, and share resources that document vendor accessibility responses via publicly available website
- Leadership and Professional Development
- Stay current on WCAG 2.0/3.0, ADA Sections 504 and 508 policy, and state and federal agency accessibility best practices, tools, and checklists
- Coordinate and partner with relevant campus units such as Student Disability Services and with external organizations such as the Library Accessibility Alliance
- Represent the Libraries on relevant campus, system, and consortium committees and working groups
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Professional experience working with one or more of the following: library electronic resources, students with disabilities, instructional technologies, accessibility projects, purchasing/vendor relations, or related.
- Ability to work well both within a team setting and autonomously.
- Ability to independently, as well as collaboratively, assess licensed resources for accessibility, including managing multiple and simultaneous projects.
- Knowledge of current trends, best practices, tools and technologies related to accessibility.
- Knowledge of WCAG 2.0/2.1, A/AA, and ADA Sections 504 and 508.
- Knowledge of various desktop operating systems including Windows, MacOS and ChromeOS.
- Ability and aptitude to independently learn, use, and evaluate new technologies to enhance and deliver information services.
- Ability to describe accessibility issues and recommendations for resolving them to non-subject matter experts.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Ability to monitor and track issues and resolutions.
- Ability to self-manage, adhere to deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
- Proven ability to work effectively in a service-oriented environment, which values collaboration and collegiality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in disability studies, instructional technology, information science, or related field.
- Experience with user-experience testing, usability testing, or equivalent.
- International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) Web Accessibility Specialist
- (WAS) certification.
- Experience working with assistive technology such as JAWS and NVDA.
- Experience with Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 Criteria and testing tools (manual and automated).
- Experience in writing Accessibility Evaluation Report, VPAT, and Equally Effective Alternative Access Plans.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards and their implementation in Libraries.
- Basic knowledge of copyright as it relates to persons with disabilities.
