The ALA Committee on Education invites you to join us for a Virtual Forum, May 17, 2023, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm (Eastern) for a conversation discussing ways to use the newly revised ALA Core Competences of Librarianship. Register now.

How will an updated version of our Core Competences impact you and your practice?  The 2022 version of the Core Competences of Librarianship was approved in January 2023 after many years of consultation and revision. These competences describe the knowledge, skills, and abilities of a professional librarian. This session will briefly discuss some of the key changes that were made in this update, and then move into a discussion about the ways that these newly revised competences can be used by different stakeholders ─employers, LIS faculty members, students, and emerging professionals. Specifically, speakers will share some tangible uses of the Core Competences from their perspective, including how the competences could impact them from a professional and personal growth perspective. The session will then move into an open discussion about potential uses of the Core Competences.

    Participants will:

    • Develop an understanding about what the new Core Competences of Librarianship are and how they were revised and updated.
    • Identify ways that the new Core Competences of Librarianship can be used and applied by different stakeholders.
    • Share ideas about other applications of the new Core Competences of Librarianship.

Register now to be part of this critical discussion.
