OCLC Virtual AskQC Office Hours registration now available

  • 1.  OCLC Virtual AskQC Office Hours registration now available

    Posted Jul 11, 2025 01:50 PM

Registration is now open for OCLC's August-October 2025 Virtual AskQC Office Hours. Here are the topics for these free monthly sessions:

August: From title source to AI-generated metadata: Why data provenance matters

September: WorldCat records revealed: The secret lives of validation and controlling

October: Making RDA relationship elements work

These webinars are offered twice each month, once at 10 AM Eastern time on a Tuesday and once at 4 PM Eastern time on a Thursday, for anyone who wishes to attend. We welcome attendees from all parts of the world. See our Current AskQC office hours page for dates, descriptions of each session, and registration links.

In the meantime, perhaps you are thinking, "How am I supposed to get through July without a free OCLC cataloging webinar?" Good news! Our Previous AskQC office hours are available and OCLC's Metadata Quality staff have these personal favorites to recommend:

January 2024 :: Reading LC Authority Records: provides information on quickly identifying the type of authority record in the LC Names and Subjects file, reading authority records for authors who have "multiple identities" (including that 663 note!), using those 3XXs fields to identify the correct entity.

March 2023 :: Languages, Non-Latin Scripts and Mysterious MARC 880 fields: explains the difference between language of cataloging and language of the resource, why you would use paired fields, and what that 245 <> means.

September 2022 :: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: Editing Bibliographic Records: covers when you can change the Type and BLvl, what fields cannot be edited, and what to do when you get that dreaded "not authorized" message.

Note that these webinar recordings can be enjoyed in locations as diverse as your chilly office cubicle to a lounge chair by the pool. And wherever you have internet access, you can email us at askqc@oclc.org with cataloging policy questions and recommendations for future webinars.
