Were you a past member of the Newspaper Interest Group that met at ALA Annual? Do you share an interest in the use of newspapers for research? Are you involved or interested in newspaper digitization and preservation?
The RUSA History Section is exploring bringing back the Newspaper Interest Group that dissolved post-COVID. Please fill out this survey and express your interest on the topic.
The Newspaper Interest Group was a stand-alone section that met each year at ALA Annual. Attendees included those interested and working on newspaper digitization projects and their use in libraries. Topics spanned from digitization to preservation, microfilm, new collections and updates to projects including those participating in the National Digital Newspaper Program. The sessions also included presentations on the use of newspapers in libraries with topics like crowd-source correction, tagging, use within genealogy, local history and K-12 areas, and more. Sessions at ALA Annual often included 4-5 short presentations and open discussion that included updates from attendees. Past presenters included University of Florida, US Holocaust Museum, Library of Congress, East View Information Services, Content Conversion Specialists and more.
The group last met in July 2023 and this would be an opportunity to revive it in some format. We would like to gather feedback to understand the interest in this topic and gauge the level of participation we might expect. Please complete the Newspaper Interest Group survey by March 24th.
