    Hi all,
My institution is investigating the possibility of moving from a rotation-based model (Year 1 spent in rotations, Year 2 & 3 spent in resident-selected placement area) to a pre-determined functional role for our residents. As we contemplate this new model, our planning committee is seeking some clarity from those who coordinate this latter type of residency:

    1) How do you determine the residency's primary assignment? Is it more or less the same, standing position that all residents are hired into? Or is the role created based on changing vacancies or project needs? If a needs-based position, how do you go about determining the residency assignment or project during each hiring cycle?
    2) What intentional mechanisms are in place to ensure sustainability and that the resident isn't just filling a staffing gap?
    3) Are there opportunities in your residency program for residents to gain exposure to adjacent areas to their functional role? If so, what does that look like?

Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide,
