Introducing New AASLIG Convener & 2025 Project Initiatives

  • 1.  Introducing New AASLIG Convener & 2025 Project Initiatives

    Posted Jul 03, 2025 09:51 AM

    Dear AASLIG Community,

I hope this message finds you well. As of July 1st, I am honored to step into the role of Convener for the African American Studies Librarians Interest Group (AASLIG). I want to extend my sincere thanks to Eddie Hughes for his service as last year's Convener and to Glenda Alvin for her leadership and guidance as our Past Convener. I'm also pleased to welcome Kristen Joy Owens, who has graciously stepped into the role of Incoming Convener, and Christina Vortia, who will continue to serve as our liaison with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). I look forward to building on the important work they have done to support and grow our community.

AASLIG remains committed to providing resources, ideas, and networking opportunities to support African American Studies librarianship and the African American Subject Funnel Project. As we begin this new term, I want to share a few of the project initiatives for the upcoming year:

    • LibGuide Updates: Review and enhance the AASLIG LibGuide to ensure it remains a relevant and valuable resource.
    • History of AASLIG: Recreate the history of AASLIG using archival sources, previous newsletters, and possibly oral histories from past conveners. If you have materials, memories, or interest in helping, please reach out.
    • Community Outreach & Engagement: We hope to connect with African American Studies librarians across institutions, especially those new to the field or unfamiliar with AASLIG and the African American Subject Funnel.
    • Governance Review: Updating the AASLIG Governance document and developing a handbook for future conveners will also be part of this year's activities.

If you're interested in participating or have ideas to share, I'd love to hear from you at dstukes@email.unc.edu.

Thank you all for your continued support of AASLIG. I look forward to working with you this year.

    Regards,
    Deseree
