Hi ACRL AI folks!
I wanted to take a moment to share a couple of interesting articles we discussed recently at my org's AI Reading Club - - both are by Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor, professors of computer science at Princeton U, who focus on demythologizing AI and highlighting both its shortcomings, and strategies for mitigating harms.
The first, How Generative AI Works and How It Fails, is well-summarized by its title, and sparked a lot of great discussion among our club (Narayanan and Kapoor include discussion questions at the bottom of the case study).
The second, AI as Normal Technology, is a landing page for their broader philosophy (and future book) about AI and generative AI specifically. In their words, the content is focused on four main themes:
-
Resisting AI doom narratives
-
Debunking hype about AI's capabilities and transformative effects
-
Understanding why AI evaluation is so tricky (which is one root cause of AI hype)
-
Helping AI policy stay grounded in the evidence.
Interesting reads, and sparked some fruitful discussion - - hope it may do the same for you!
