    ️ About the Talk:

Join Dr. Daina Ramey Berry for the Waring Library Society's third annual Black History Month Lecture. Her talk "Ghost Values and American Slavery: A New Medical History of the United States," draws upon research from her award-winning book, The Price for Their Pound of Flesh: The Value of the Enslaved, From Womb to Grave, in the Building of a Nation (Beacon, 2017). This study revealed new evidence about the value of enslaved bodies and the connections to 19th century medical education in the United States.

The 2024 WLS Black History Month Lecture will be a hybrid event. The in-person event will include a reception after the lecture. Both the virtual and in person components are free and open to the public. Registration is required for both formats.

     About Dr. Daina Ramey Berry:

Daina Ramey Berry is Michael Douglas Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is a scholar of the enslaved and Black Women's History and the award-winning author/editor of six books including the recent, A Black Women's History of the United States.

This lecture is cosponsored by MUSC Libraries and the MUSC Office of Humanities. Their generous support speaks to our shared dedication to advancing knowledge, fostering dialogue, and showcasing research related to the intersection of Black history and medical history.
