Alice G. Smith Lecture -2021
Please join the faculty and students at the School of Information, University of South Florida for the annual Alice G. Smith Lecture on December 16, 2021 from 6:00-7:30pm. The Lecture will be presented virtually via Microsoft Teams.
"Changing the Face of Librarianship: REFORMA and Library Services to Latino Communities."
Lecturers: Lucia M. Gonzalez and Alicia K. Long.
In this 50th anniversary year of the establishment of REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, the Lecturers will assess the development of library services to Latinos in the United States, discuss challenges, and provide suggestions to increase the number of Latino librarians working in our nation's libraries.
Lucia M. Gonzalez, award winning author of The Storyteller's Candle and The Bossy Gallito is president of the Association for Library Services to Children. She is past president of national REFORMA and Director of the North Miami Public Library.
Alicia K. Long, author of "Developing an impactful diverse literature course for future librarians" is president of REFORMA de Florida and Access Services Librarian at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota. She teaches the graduate course, "Multicultural Literature for Children" at the University of South Florida.
Vanessa Reyes, author of Saving Your Digital Past, Present, and Future, (2020), Instructor at the School of Information and REFORMA member will introduce the Lecturers.
Maria Feliciano, a current student at the School of Information, executive board member of SOLIS, and member of Reforma de Florida, will lead off the Question-and-Answer session that will follow the Lecture.
The Alice G. Smith Lecture series is in its 32nd year and was founded to honor the visionary work of Dr. Smith, who was central to the School's accreditation by the American Library Association in 1975.
