COMPACT SHELVING AND ACCESSIBILITY CONSIDERATIONS

  • 1.  COMPACT SHELVING AND ACCESSIBILITY CONSIDERATIONS

After getting one bay of electronic-close compact shelving years ago, we did not favor increasing our compact shelving due to issues with the electronic components. Our Special Collections is getting ready to renovate and they want to convert their existing electronic-close compact shelves to manual due to the problems they have with it. Now, I need to add more compact shelving for the main stacks and I automatically thought: has to be manual. But, what about accessibility? I know these products are "ADA compliant", but I also know that is really a minimum in terms of accessibility...

Any advice from those who have converted to compact shelving or use compact shelving in their main stacks about lessons learned --particularly about the accessibility and manual/electronic debate? Thanks, Shelly
