Dear library technical services colleagues,
You are invited to participate in a research study on library technical services workers' current use of AI tools for technical services tasks and beyond. It covers the types of tasks supported/enhanced by AI tools and the perceived and/or experienced barriers to incorporating these tools.
We want to hear from library workers who meet the following criteria:
- Over 18 years of age
- Currently working in the U.S.
- Currently working in any type of library (i.e. academic, public, K-12, special, etc.)
- Currently working in any type of position (i.e. administrator, librarian, staff, student workers, etc.).
- With current job responsibilities in technical services, including (but not limited to) acquisitions, collection development/strategy/management, electronic resource management, cataloging & metadata, database/catalog maintenance, etc.
- Multiple respondents from the same institution are permitted.
We want to hear from library technical services workers with any and all levels of experience with AI tools, including those who have never used them. We're interested in hearing about your experiences and the issues you're facing as you're considering the use of these tools.
If you do not meet these criteria, please feel free to share this message with colleagues who do.
Survey timeline:
The survey will be open through August 13, 2026.
Survey link:
The survey should take approximately 10–20 minutes to complete and is confidential. Questions are primarily multiple choice with optional free responses allowing for more detailed information.
Participation is voluntary, and survey responses will be anonymized. Results from this survey will be used to write/present about AI usage in technical services, including the types of tasks supported/enhanced by AI tools and the perceived/experienced barriers to incorporating these tools.
