Apologies, as I had a hard time coming up with an appropriate subject to cover this!
We're currently in the process of creating a workflow and policy (well, technically working on a lot of these right now, but I digress…).
In this case, we're wondering about 2 types of electronic or digital materials that come with things that you've purchased.
- When you get access codes or URLs to access additional/supplemental materials or eversions of the items, do you do anything with them? Do you include information in the record/catalog about them? Do you remove the codes/discard or redact that info? Download the materials (if possible) and provide them in some format (burned to CD, zip drive, CDL, locally hosted etc)? Try to avoid purchasing those versions to begin with?
- What about materials where you've purchased them and they are a PDF that you download or is emailed to you? Do you print/bind them? Put them in some storage device? Host them? CDL? I know I've seen examples of folks using CDL type add ons to their ILS for music scores that come like this. I also know some serial publications are in these emailed pdf formats too.
Obviously some of this is dictated by licenses that may exist with the purchase etc, but if you have workflows or policies or rules of thumbs or documentation or rationale relating to how you handle/describe/acquire such materials we'd love to hear from you!
