Join author Brea Baker on May 15 at 1pm EST for a discussion on land justice and her book, Rooted: The American Legacy of Land Theft and the Modern Movement for Black Land Ownership.
Why is less than 1% of rural land in the U.S. today is owned by Black people? Writer and activist Brea Baker discusses the history of attacks on Indigenous and Black land ownership that led to Black Americans losing about 90% of their farmland between 1910 and 1997. Combining the history of land theft and displacement with her own family's story of Black land ownership, Baker explores how these injustices devastated Black and Native communities who had close relationships to their land that were rooted in community sustainability rather than capitalism.
