  • 1.  Carbon offsets post 3: Know where your money's going

    Posted Jun 20, 2025 03:48 PM

I'm finally back with more information on carbon offsets. Today's post explains how to find a carbon offset provider you can trust.

If you use ALA's carbon offset partner, Native: A Public Benefit Corporation, you can contribute confidently. Native's greenhouse gas (GHG) offset projects both mitigate GHG and strengthen the localities in which the project unfolds. (My next post will explore a few of the carbon offset projects you could help Native pursue.)

A few other reputable companies that offer carbon offsets are Terrapass, TR[1]BE (One Tribe), and Cool Effect, Inc. – but many worthy entities sell these credits plus an almost endless list of projects. For example, "A Bearadise" from Cool Effect protects an old-growth spruce forest on the North Coast of Afognak Island from illegal logging, monitors this remote and isolated property for fire, and collects and oversees data from the site 365 days a year.

Carbon offset credits are measured in tonnes, just as the carbon footprint is. Let's say you want to offset a direct flight from LaGuardia Airport to Philadelphia International. The carbon emissions attributable to one seat on a 737 is approximately .274 tonnes. You could "buy" (it's more like a donation or contribution) a one-tonne carbon offset in A Bearadise for $18.68. This one investment would likely offset your entire ALA 2025 experience.

Whichever project you choose, make sure at least one industry expert has verified the project. Verra (Verified Carbon Standard), Gold Standard, Plan Vivo, Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance, Climate Action Reserve, and American Carbon Registry are all reliable verification registries. Many of them allow individuals and companies to buy carbon credits directly through the registry.

    Larissa-

Thank you so very much for helping me understand about carbon offsets. Maybe you covered this in a previous post but where might we find carbon calculators geared at travel in particular? I won't be flying from LaGuardia anytime soon, but would like to start offsetting my travel in meaningful ways.

Grateful for your time and knowledge!

Thank you for asking, Julie. Many carbon offset vendors, like Native (ALA's preferred vendor) provide calculators for determining individual travel emissions: https://native.eco/for-individuals/calculators/#Travel
