Walk Around Philadelphia: Discovering the City by Exploring Its Boundaries

The Walk Around Philadelphia, also known as "the Walk", is a 100 mile walk around the city's borderline. Twice each year, local artist and licensed massage therapist JJ Tiziou hosts the Walk as a participatory navigation experience in twelve segments over four three-day weekends. Print and digital maps of Philadelphia are a starting point for the journey, and also provide direction along the way. Walkers explore Philadelphia's perimeter and engage with one another, wildlife, neighbors, natural landscapes, and man-made infrastructure on the margins of one of America's largest and most vibrant cities. The Walk is an inclusive project that welcomes participants of all income levels, with no one turned away for lack of funds and stipends offered to support participants facing financial hardship. JJ's vision is that one day every high school senior in Philadelphia will have the opportunity to complete the Walk as part of experiential learning programs or as a graduation ritual, that incoming university students and folks moving to the area will be able to use the Walk as a way to connect more deeply to their new home and neighbors, and that citizens returning from incarceration at the city's margins will have opportunities to earn stipends as part of a reentry program while walking alongside social service providers and prospective employers. All of this has already happened in small ways. By creating shared experience and connection between participants of all ages and backgrounds from across the entire city and metropolitan area, Walk Around Philadelphia cultivates community, civic pride, public health, and a richer understanding of the complexities of an urban environment.

      Best,
      Erin
