(I tried forwarding this message to MAGIRT via email, but **IT REVERTED TO ACRL** instead of going to MAGIRT like I told it to. Embarrassing *and* unhelpful! So I'm copying & pasting instead. This time it really ought to work? I hope? Urgh.)
Hi everyone -
This message from Dawn Emsellem <
dawn.emsellem@salve.edu> came through on some ACRL Connect lists yesterday, and I offered to repost to MAGIRT and MAPS-L to try & get some more map librarians' attention.
I know there's work going on in this area, but can't recall the specifics off the top of my head -- I'd like to hear about it too, because I think there'd be other interested people around here at UMN. (And if you don't mind, please cc Dawn on your replies so she'll get the messages.)

--- FORWARDED MESSAGE ---
Hello colleagues,We're in the planning stages of figuring out how to add Narragansett place name metadata to related materials in our digital repository. We're in contact with Narragansett representatives, we ultimately hope to work with the Narragansett Nation to develop a controlled vocabulary of Narragansett place names and to map these names. In time we hope to do this with place names used by other native people as well. Is anyone is working on similar projects or know of related projects? It would be great to learn from people who have already started working on something like this. I'm particularly interested in best practices surrounding metadata creation for indigenous names and approaches and tools for mapping place names (we're currently looking at options through OpenStreetMap and Leaflet). Thank you for any suggestions you may have!Sincerely,Dawn Emsellem
