    MAGERT members,
At the Midwinter meeting in San Diego, the MAGERT board moved to change the name of MAGERT to the Map and Geospatial Information Round Table (MAGIRT).  Discussion at the Board meeting was noted in the minutes distributed in the February Base Line.   After 30 years as 'Map and Geography' RT the board is in complete agreement to make this slight, but yet meaningful change.  The board would like everyone to consider this and make your feelings know, therefore, this message center is established in Connect and the vote will take place in the spring ballot.
The justification for this proposed change: To update the phrasing to emphasize the increasing role of geospatial information in today's libraries; while at the same time staying close to the historically established and known form of the RT name.
NOTE: If approved, the name and acronym will be automatically reflected throughout all official RT documents, including the bylaws.
    Sincerely,
    Kathy Weimer,
    Past-Chair, MAGERT

I personally think that this is a positive change, for the reasons Kathy gave. It will take a bit of getting used to, but its also important that a name relay as accurately as possible what the people behind it are and are doing.

I first heard the proposal at Midwinter, adn I dont' have a problem with it.  Name changes can be difficult to effect in people's minds, but the acronym and pronunciation are so similar that I doubt we'll see a lot of trouble from it.
