Need ideas/input on a GIS Lite event

I'd like to start a discusion thread to talk about an event / workshop a library might hold to introduce GIS or more likely GIS Lite to the public. Have you held such a thing or have you thought about it?  I'd like to hear about everything.  Like how the event is structured, room style, handouts, registration,  anything you care to share.

I've been asked to prepare an event as part of a much larger 10-day university event called "Science Festival" that will draw in thousands of people from the community.  My program will be one of dozens, and I'll cap enrollment around 15-20 people.  I'm picturing a hands-on event in which attendees utilize --- probably ArcGIS online --- to make a custom map.

But I don't have to do that -- I could do something else that will engage community members in the geography/map world.

In the past I held a workshop for emeriti faculty about detailed land research.  But that was more lecture format.

The Science Festival, if you are curious, is modeled on Cambridge University's very successful event.
