The mission of the Library Research Round Table (LRRT) is to contribute toward the extension and improvement of library research; to provide public program opportunities for describing and evaluating library research projects and for disseminating their findings; to inform and educate ALA members concerning research techniques and their usefulness in obtaining information with which to reach administrative decisions and solve problems; and expand the theoretical base of the field. LRRT also, serves as a forum for discussion and action on issues related to the literature and information needs for the field of library and information science.

    Description:

    Gisèle will start with a brief overview of core media services in libraries and will highlight existing scholarship as well as research priorities related to format obsolescence and copyright advocacy, the impact of the pandemic on media services, pedagogical applications of media, and the implementation and management of streaming collections. 

    Scott will continue with a brief overview of different types of student-created media projects, in addition to project benefits, library-based support models,, and related considerations. Scott will also discuss current scholarship related to the role of libraries and student-created media, notably, citing his recent book "Student-Created Media: Designing Research, Learning, and Skill-Building Experiences" (ALA Editions, 2022).

     

    Gisèle Tanasse is the Film & Media Services Librarian at the University of California, Berkeley (xučyun, the ancestral and unceded land of the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone people) and is the American Library Association's Film & Media Round Table Councilor, and an FMRT Past Chair. Gisèle administers the popular VideoLib and VideoNews Listservs currently serves on the Advisory Board for the Academic Libraries Video Trust and has served on the Kanopy Content Advisory Board. Gisèle chaired the task force for the 2018 Revisions to the ACRL Guidelines for Media Resources in Academic Libraries, authored ACRL's Choice White Paper "Implementing and managing streaming media services in academic libraries," and presents regularly on issues related to streaming and media services in academic libraries. Gisèle is passionate about engaging with fellow library workers, with the goal of simplifying processes that empower library users with knowledge.

     

    Scott Spicer serves as Media Outreach Librarian for the University of Minnesota Libraries (Twin Cities), where he functions as head of the Libraries Media Services program. His primary responsibilities include outreach to instructors on the development and support of course-integrated student-created media assignments and commercial educational media resources. He has studied, published, and presented on a diverse range of media-related topics in higher education, including the benefits and library support of student-created media, educational media resources, media literacy skill set development, and multimodal scholarship with additional interests in emerging technologies. Notably, Spicer recently authored the book, "Student-Created Media: Designing Research, Learning and Skill-Building Experiences" (ALA Editions, 2022). A former chair of ALA's Film and Media Round Table, he holds an M.L.I.S from Dominican University and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction (Learning Technologies) from the University of Minnesota.
