The mission of the Library Research Round Table (LRRT) is to contribute toward the extension and improvement of library research; to provide public program opportunities for describing and evaluating library research projects and for disseminating their findings; to inform and educate ALA members concerning research techniques and their usefulness in obtaining information with which to reach administrative decisions and solve problems; and expand the theoretical base of the field. LRRT also, serves as a forum for discussion and action on issues related to the literature and information needs for the field of library and information science.

    Call for Papers: Special Issue of the Journal of Academic Librarianship

    Artificial Intelligence and Academic Libraries

    April 2023

    The Journal of Academic Librarianship is gathering papers for a special virtual issue on how college and university libraries have integrated, adapted to, or are preparing for AI in higher education. 

    Guest editors:

    Dr. Andrew Cox, BA (Open), MA (TVU), MSc (UWA), MA (Open), MEd (Sheffield), PhD (Loughborough)Information School at the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, England.

    Special issue information:

    ChatGPT and other generative AI tools are rapidly changing user information behaviours and expectations. They are altering how users create content, e.g. through writing, translation and summarization. They also pose new challenges for critical information literacy and shift expectations about search results. Wider impacts on educational practices will transform the context within which academic libraries work.

    The Journal of Academic Librarianship is gathering papers for a special virtual issue on how college and university libraries have integrated, adapted to, or are preparing for AI in higher education. Papers must focus on the academic library; topics of of interest about AI include, but are not limited to:

    • Responses to generative AI
    • AI for Knowledge discovery in text, audio and image collections
    • Chatbots, for reference enquiries and other services
    • Data/ AI/ algorithmic literacy as new aspects of information literacy
    • Support of communities of data scientists
    • Analysis and prediction of user behaviour
    • Smart spaces

    We are excited to have Dr. Andrew Cox from the Information School at the University of Sheffield (UK) as guest editor. Dr. Cox has become one of the premier scholars in research regarding AI and the work of information professionals.

    Manuscript submission information:

    This call is for an online, special issue of The Journal of Academic Librarianship. Papers will be accepted for review on a rolling basis, but priority will be given to those submitted by November 1, 2023.
