Teaching and Collecting Technical Standards: A Handbook for Librarians and Educators

Despite the critical role that standards play within academia and the workforce, little information is available on the development of standards information literacy, which includes the ability to understand the standardization process; identify types of standards; as well as locate, evaluate, and use them effectively. In "Teaching and Collecting Technical Standards: A Handbook for Librarians and Educators," librarian co-editors from Washington State University, the University at Buffalo, Purdue University, and Case Western Reserve University provide background information for librarians and other educators on technical standards, best practices for standards collection development, and case studies of standards instruction in many disciplines, including engineering, business, and law.

"'Teaching and Collecting Technical Standards' provides a comprehensive overview of searching, accessing, collecting, and teaching with standards. The authors and contributors have demonstrated how standards information literacy can meet or enhance the educational outcomes required by higher education accrediting bodies through a series of case studies, demonstrating the integration of standards education in a variety of engineering disciplines, health sciences, business, and law. This book serves as an important resource for librarians and educators new to technical standards education and those who serve disciplines with increasing interest in teaching standards information literacy," says Anne Rauh, head of collections and research services at Syracuse University Libraries.

The book is published through Purdue University Press as part of the Purdue Information Literacy Handbooks series. Paperback and hardcover versions are now available for purchase.
