The mission of the Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) is to provide a forum for discussion of activities, programs, and problems of instruction in the use of libraries; to contribute to the education and training of librarians for library instruction; to promote instruction in the use of libraries as an essential library service, and to serve as a channel of communication on library instruction between the ALA divisions, ALA and ACRL committees, state clearinghouses, Project LOEX, other organizations concerned with instruction in the use of libraries, and members of the Association.

    First, thank you to everyone who has responded to the survey on Generative AI and the Evolution of Information Literacy Instruction so far! If you have not gotten a chance to participate and still would like to do so, the survey will remain open until May 21. (Please see below for information on the purpose of the study and informed consent.)

    Study title: Generative AI and the Evolution of Information Literacy Instruction
    IRB#: 24X097

    Informed Consent Form
    The survey administrator is seeking input from any librarians who teach information literacy in a higher education environment. Collected data will be used to inform an exploratory analysis of whether and how information literacy instruction is starting to evolve given the availability of this new technology. This consent document explains the purpose of the study, the procedures used, and the risks and benefits of survey participation.

    Purpose
    This study is exploratory; its purpose is to investigate whether and how the recent implementation of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT are changing the way information literacy and library instruction are taught. 
     
    Procedure
    Participation in this study consists of answering survey questions. Depending on the level of qualitative input, the survey should take approximate 15-30 minutes to complete. 
     
    Instrument
    The survey will be administered using the Qualtrics web-based survey tool.
     
    Voluntary Participation
    Participation in this study is voluntary. You have the right to withdraw at any time or refuse to participate without penalty. To withdraw, close the survey window.
     
    Anonymity and Confidentiality
    Responses will be stripped of any identifiable information. Data will be stored on a third party server. While the third party has agreed to keep the data confidential, UAlbany does not control the security of that server.
     
    Risks
    There are no anticipated risks of participation in this study.
     
    Benefits
    There are no anticipated direct benefits of participation in this study. However, it is hoped that the results will provide a snapshot of how information literacy and library instruction are starting to evolve, if they are evolving at all, with the recent implementation of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT.
