    Miriam Hornbeck -secretary to the ALA Council and Executive Board

    Miriam Hornback (1944-1991) worked for ALA for her entire career. She began as a junior secretary on June 12, 1944.

    She was a longtime secretary to the ALA Council and Executive Board, and she was also a documenter of Council and Executive Board actions from 1969 to 1991.

    She served  the American Library Association for a total of 47 years.

    Miriam Hornbeck worked with 47 presidents and seven executive directors, and she attended more than 80 Annual Conferences and Midwinter Meetings. 

     

    Miriam Hornbeck  was a member of ALA for 38 years. She announced that she would retire in January 1992, but she died unexpectedly on April 1, 1991.

    In 1991 she was awarded ALA Honorary Membership. A scholarship was established in her memory  consisting of $3,000 to an ALA or library support staffer who is  pursuing an MLS in an ALA-accredited program.
