Dr. Gail A. Schlachter (1943-2015) earned degrees from University of California, Berkeley, BA; Master's degrees in Education, American Colonial History, and Library Science- University of Wisconsin; Ph. D. University of Minnesota.
Dr. Schlachter was President of Reference Service Press, member of the American Library Association Executive Board, the Council of the American Library Association, and President of the Reference and User Services Association.
She was Chair, ALA Publishing Committee; Chair, American Libraries Advisory Committee; and Editor-in-Chief, Reference and User Services Quarterly.
Dr. Schlachter was honored:

The family and friends of Dr. Gail Schlachter have endowed the Gail Schlachter Memorial Research Grant in her honor and hosted it with the Reference and User Services Association of the American Library Association. Dr. Schlachter had an abiding interest in LIS research that started in the early 1970s with her publication Library Science Dissertations (which ran from 1925–1972). The Gail Schlachter Memorial Research Grant will be awarded yearly to encourage and enrich the research in library science.
