    Dr. Charles D. Patterson

    Dr. Charles D. Patterson (1928- 2010 ) received the American Library Association Beta Phi Mu Award in 1989. He was a decorated solider in the U.S. Army,  He was a musician, professor, editor, author,  library administrator and leader in library association activities. He was a distinguished professor at Louisiana State University's School of Library and Information Science from 1971 to 1993.

    Charles Patterson was born in Wahpeton, North Dakota,. He  was awarded the Bachelor of Science with majors in history, music and speech from Bemidji State University in 1950.  Patterson's brief experience as a music teacher in Fargo, North Dakota  was interrupted by his induction into the military.

    Charles Patterson served two years in Japan and Korea, where he was a supply sergeant in an infantry regiment and achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was decorated with the Japanese Occupation Medal, the Korean Occupation Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Bronze Star Medal.

    He earned the Master of Arts (1956) with majors in library science, music, and education from the University of Minnesota, and the Master of Music (1964) with majors in organ and church music from West Virginia University.

    After  his military service, in addition to graduate studies, Patterson moved quickly through increasingly responsible positions in library service:

    • reference librarian at the University of Minnesota (1954-55);
    • head librarian at Bemidji (Minnesota) State University (1955-58), 
    • Director of Libraries and Assistant Professor at Glenville (West Virginia) State College (1958-1962); chair of the Department of Library Science at West Virginia University (1962-1966).

    Patterson moved to the University of Pittsburgh in 1966, where was awarded the Advanced Certificate in Library Science (1968) and the Doctor of Philosophy in Library Science (1971). He was an instructor in the University of Pittsburgh School of Library and Information Science from 1966 to 1971, and an assistant professor from 1971 to 1972. 

    Patterson moved to Louisiana State University School of Library and Information Science in 1972, He chaired the Steering Committee for the Committee on Accreditation Self-Study Report for three visits (1973, 1979, and 1984).

    He served as faculty advisor to the Beta Zeta Chapter of Beta Phi Mu since 1974. A member of Beta Phi Mu since 1971, he served as chair (1983) and member (1982) of Beta Phi Mu's National Awards Jury and National Director-at-Large (1982-1985). Dr. Patterson received the American Library Association Beta Phi Mu Award "for distinguished service to education for librarianship" in 1989.
