The Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) provides a forum for the discussion of activities, programs, and problems in intellectual freedom of libraries and librarians.

The IFRT Members Community group is the central hub for discussion, library and events. It is visible to all ALA members but only IFRT members can participate in the conversation.

    Hello!

    Does anyone have a moratorium on challenges/complaints? Like if someone challenges *Gender Queer* and it's kept in the collection it can't be challenged again for X time?

    My director is interested in other libraries' policies in regards to this.

    Hi Shawn,

    We recently updated our Collection Development Policy to include this statement:

    The library will only formally reconsider a specific title from its collection once in any eighteen-month period.
    Subsequent requests for reconsideration will be answered without following the full process unless specific new
    information or insight is provided in a subsequent request which would, in the library's opinion, prompt further action.

    Our policy states: "Once a final decision has been made, the same material may not be challenged by any individual or group again for one calendar year"

    Hello,

    ASD recently reviewed/rewrote our Controversial Issue (challenge) policy. Our process includes the following:
    A challenger may only have one item in the challenge process at a time. When any challenged material has completed the review and appeal process by the District, it shall not be subject to any additional reconsideration for 36 months.

    Because of this limit, when an item is reconsidered, the Committee determines suitability for inclusion in school library collection, classroom library, and instructional use at elementary, middle, and high school levels.
