The Library Bill of Rights Interpretations and the Intellectual Freedom Manual are essential, member-created resources that are regularly updated to reflect the evolving challenges of the library profession. With the recent publication of the 11th edition of the Intellectual Freedom Manual, this panel will provide an overview of how these documents are revised and maintained by member leaders. Panelists include an editor of the Intellectual Freedom Manual, the Chair of the Intellectual Freedom Committee, and a member involved in updating the Library Bill of Rights Interpretations. They will share insight into the member-driven process that keeps these resources current and relevant.
The session will examine the recent move to plain language, which makes the documents clearer, easier to understand, and more accessible to library staff, trustees, governing bodies, and the public. Attendees will learn how members-not staff directives-shape the content and how this work connects to ALA's long history of supporting intellectual freedom. A Q&A session will allow participants to ask questions about recent updates to the Interpretations, explore opportunities to get involved, and consider their own role in sustaining these foundational documents.
Hear from the editor of the 11th edition of the Intellectual Freedom Manual, Erin Jones, and Chair of the Intellectual Freedom Committee, Johannah Genett.
Attendees will also have the chance to win a copy of the latest Intellectual Freedom Manual!
