How should library workers navigate dual commitments to intellectual freedom and social progress?
How should information institutions respond to information disorder?
What information is communicated in content (aka "trigger") warnings, and where are they used?
These are some of the questions Dr. Emily Knox explores in her research on intellectual freedom and censorship, information ethics, and information access.

Emily is a widely cited scholar on topics related to intellectual freedom, including censorship, book banning, information policy, and information access. She is the author or editor of three books:
Her articles have appeared in Library Quarterly, Library and Information Science Research, Open Information Science, and the Journal of Intellectual Freedom and Privacy, where she currently serves as editor. Emily is also frequently interviewed in the popular media about book banning and censorship.

HxLibraries hosts multiple symposia each year - featuring a keynote speaker, small group discussions, and Q&A - as well as monthly happy hours via Zoom, and publishes the Heterodoxy in the Stacks substack. HxLibraries members include Library and Information Science (LIS) faculty, LIS degree-holders and -seekers, and library workers of all backgrounds and from all types of libraries. Membership is free. Each symposium begins with remarks from a keynote speaker (25-30 mins.) followed by small group discussion (15-20 mins.) and concludes with Q&A (15 mins.).
Previous symposia have explored trends in LIS scholarship related to intellectual freedom, neutrality, social justice, and diversity, equity, and inclusion; the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR); the neutrality debate in libraries; and democratic thinking and other democratic virtues. HxLibraries members are encouraged to present or propose symposia.
