The Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) provides a forum for the discussion of activities, programs, and problems in intellectual freedom of libraries and librarians.

The IFRT Members Community group is the central hub for discussion, library and events. It is visible to all ALA members but only IFRT members can participate in the conversation.

    Executive Board Meeting Highlights

    Highlights from the August ALA Executive Board Meeting. For more detailed information, please refer to the Board Meeting Minutes.

    DEIA Efforts at ALA in current climate

    ·       ALA's current DEIA language and initiatives are legally compliant

    ·       The Board discussed the need for additional legal and communication efforts to support DEIA initiatives

    ALA Forward Update

    ·       ALA is embarking on a new strategic plan, which was announced to membership in July, and staff will now develop specific goals and metrics in alignment with the adopted plan

    ·       Additionally, ALA completed an internal organizational assessment resulting in a three-year roadmap for internal structures and priorities, which have been announced to staff

    Upcoming Special Council Meeting on August 27, 2025 with the following agenda items:

    ·       ALA's Societal Statement recommendation

    ·       ALA Policy recommendations in light of the new strategic plan

    ·       Update on the AI Policy Working Group

    Future Presidential Initiatives

    ·       With the recent approved decrease in budgets for both president and president-elect initiatives, the Board is working to support ALA's Nominating Committee to set forth clear expectations to future candidates

    Motion/Board vote to:

    Amend the policy that all meetings be held in closed session to include the proviso that all meetings shall first start in open session to allow for welcomes, introductions, and other procedural motions to include, but not be limited to, adoption of an agenda and approval of minutes. We will then move into executive session, and then open again to report any appropriate updates from that executive portion, and finish open business before adjourning.

    Approve San Francisco, CA, as the site for the PLA 2028 Conference, Monday, March 13 – Wednesday,
    March 15, 2028; and approve Atlanta, GA, as the site for the PLA 2030 Conference, Wednesday, March
    13 – Friday, March 15, 2030.

    Motion to have ALA Staff have legal and CMMO to confer in order to provide guidance to ODLOS on DEIA language and report back at September Board Meeting
