The IFRT Members Community group is the central hub for discussion, library and events. It is visible to all ALA members but only IFRT members can participate in the conversation.

February Publications & Communications Committee Meeting

  • 1.  February Publications & Communications Committee Meeting

    Posted Feb 21, 2019 02:01 PM
The Publications & Communications Committee of IFRT met Thursday February 21st.
    What we discussed:
We discussed the social media posts from Midwinter and believe the format of advertising for potential sessions of interest is a good one and will plan to continue it for Annual 2019.
We discussed the IFRT website and ways to streamline and maximize the content. We're wanting to add a page for upcoming and an archive of past IFRT events under the Get Involved heading. We're also planning to change the name of the page Journal of Intellectual Freedom and Privacy to Write for the Journal of Intellectual Freedom and Privacy so that it fits more clearly under Get Involved.
We plan to start early in planning out the next IFRT Report and discussed the IFRT Newsletter again and perhaps trying to more regularly push out content in between publication of the IFRT Report. Production Services is working on the Report template. On the front page of the IFRT website the IFRT News is populated with press releases that have been tagged with IFRT so we're going to try to instead make it a static section with content that we can manually update.
We discussed and dismissed the idea of trying to to keep a content thread updated on ALA Connect. We ultimately decided that the social media platforms that we're already using provide a better space for thought-provoking discussion and we don't want to dilute or confuse the content further.
We're planning to send an ask around in the near future on email and social media for IFRT member photographs to update some sections of our website and for use on social media. So be on the lookout for that!
IFRT Thoughtful Thursdays we're going to aim to post once a month mid-month. If there's something that you've got on your mind that you think would we well suited for #IFRTThoughtfulThursdays; let me know!
We're continuing with #IFRTBannedAuthorBirthdays so keep an eye out for those on social media platforms.
Instagram is a social media platform that IFRT has been attempting to utilize for about a year. Engagement is on the lower side so we believe it might not be worth continuing. The content typically generated by IFRT seems unsuited to a photographic- based platform with little discussion happening so it doesn't seem worth continuing it. We'll continue to post on our Instagram account over the course of the next month and revisit this at the next monthly meeting which will be on March 21st, 2019 at 1PM EST.
