Parent Permission to Use the School Library

  • 1.  Parent Permission to Use the School Library

    Hello All,

At our state level Future Ready Librarians meeting on Thursday, we heard about one of our mid-sized school districts that is considering a policy that would require parents to OPT IN to their students checking out materials from the school library.

We know that parents are given the option to opt their students in/out of using tech devices,  having images/info shared on social media or school publications, health classes, etc. Typically these items are of an OPT OUT nature.

This was the first the committee had heard of a form about using the school library. We wanted to see if anyone knew of a similar type of form/document being proposed or used in districts in their state.  We have concerns about this new policy/procedure limiting access for students for a variety of reasons and are also concerned that if this district makes this change that the idea could spread to others.

Any insight or feedback you can provide would be much appreciated. Thank you!
