Join IFRT and the Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table for a free webinar on Monday, February 24, Noon Central, for Most Banned - and Most Awarded: Censorship, Comics, and a still lingering moral stigma

    Register: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_1ll3byGoSRO5mwaFLbWX_g%20

In 2016 This One Summer from Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki was one of the most banned and challenged books in North America. Yet in 2014 This One Summer won the Governor General's Award for children's illustration, followed by a nod as a Caldecott Honor Book in 2015 and an Eisner Award - the highest award for comics and graphic novels in North America - for Best New Graphic Album. Since 2016 This One Summer has topped banned and challenged charts in North America - as its writer continues to win accolades. In 2019 Mariko Tamaki's graphic novel with Rosemary Valero-O'Connell, "Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me", was named a CBC best book of 2019, and in early 2020 was named a Printz Honour Book.

Join Mariko Tamaki with Michelle Arbuckle (Freedom of Expression Committee co-chair) and Angela Ocaña (Youth Services Supervisor, Eugene Public Library) as they discuss censorship, comics, intellectual freedom, and why the juxtaposed award winning / most banned image of comics and graphic novels continues.

Moderated by American Library Association (ALA) Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table President Amie Wright and co-sponsored by the ALA Intellectual Freedom Round Table, the ALA International Relations Round Table, and Canadian Book & Periodical Council's Freedom of Expression Committee.
