Volunteers Needed: GameRT Liaisons for IFC & COPE

  • 1.  Volunteers Needed: GameRT Liaisons for IFC & COPE

    Posted Jun 04, 2025 02:07 PM

    Hello, GameRT members!

I am reaching out with two volunteer opportunities. GameRT needs liaisons for the Intellectual Freedom Committee (IFC) and the Committee on Professional Ethics (COPE). These are one-year terms (July 1, 2025-June 30, 2026). Volunteers do not need to be board members, though I would ask each liaison to either submit reports for our monthly board meetings or attend the board meeting if discussion is needed regarding these commitments. Below is additional information about the committees and what liaisonship entails (although I would say that I'm not personally as concerned about the in-person attendance for ALA Annual; we didn't have liaisons at all this term, so if that's the only piece that deters you from volunteering, a liaison who can't make that last meeting is better than no liaison at all!).  I need to submit liaison information by Thursday, July 10th, so if you are interested, please either respond here or email me at amber.sewell@unlv.edu with your expression of interest before then.

Intellectual Freedom Committee:  To recommend such steps as may be necessary to safeguard the rights of library users, libraries, and librarians, in accordance with the first amendment to the United States Constitution and the Library Bill of Rights as adopted by the ALA Council. To work closely with the Office for Intellectual Freedom and with other units and officers of the association in matters touching intellectual freedom and censorship.

Meeting: Monthly virtual meetings, via Zoom, plus in-person at ALA Annual Conference (June). Regular communication and updates via ALA Connect. Later this summer, after ALA Annual Conference concludes, the committee will find a regularly scheduled time to meet. Regular communication and updates via ALA Connect.

Committee on Professional Ethics:  The council committee on professional ethics shall augment the Code of Ethics by explanatory interpretations and additional statements, prepared by this committee or elicited from other units of ALA. When units of the association develop statements dealing with ethical issues, a copy will be sent to the committee on professional ethics for review so that it may be compared to the existing ALA code of ethics in order to determine whether or not conflicts occur.  Code of Ethics: ALA Code of Ethics

COPE meets regularly, once a month, via Zoom, plus in-person at ALA Annual Conference. Later this summer, after ALA Annual Conference concludes, the committee will find a regularly scheduled time to meet. Regular communication and updates via ALA Connect.

Again, if you are interested in serving as liaison to either of these committees, please let me know by Thursday, July 10th.

    Thank you!
