  • 1.  Advice for kids' game-design workshop?

Hello, lovely people! IMy name is Debbie Baker(she/her) and I'm new to the RT so here's a little about me: I came to videogaming later in life and my first finished game was Paper Mario: 1000-Year Door. I'm currently really passionate about Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, and Palia. My partner owns over 300 board games and every year we play an ABC Challenge -- one game for each letter of the alphabet, in order.   Occasionally I have won this challenge, but my personal philosophy is that if you're not having fun, you're missing the point of playing games.
    Anyway!
I'm a children's librarian and this summer I want to run a 3-day workshop for kids where we design, create, and then play a game.  Has anyone here done such a thing before? I have some game-design experience but any anecdotes or advice would be welcome, especially things you tried that DIDN'T work.
I'm aiming for ages 7 - 10 but that's not set in stone right now. We have a good stock of components available and I'd love to keep it low-cost.  We also have a bunch of games in our LoT that can be used as examples of different styles (strategy, co-op, party/casual, etc).
Hit me with your wisdom! (Thanks in advance)

These are two quick resources that break things down! I definitely suggest looking over the Kathleen Mercury workshop because it focuses a lot on stair stepping the challenges, like creating a simple race game and then upgrading to modifying and existing game. Best of luck!
